Well, we almost booked a trip to China over Thanksgiving. Living Social, the deal-of-the-day website (similar to Groupon), sells vacation packages at highly discounted rates, and that’s where the Carioca found an 8-day getaway to the People’s Republic, including airfare from JFK, hotels, domestic flights, ground transportation, breakfast (some lunches and dinners), English-speaking tour guides, entrance fees to various sights, a sight-seeing bus, and trip insurance – all for $1199 per person. Most of the traveling takes place in the Beijing and Shanghai areas, and includes (of course) a visit to the Great Wall. Not only that, but one of the travel periods was November 22-29, i.e., over Thanksgiving, necessitating only four vacation days from work for us. Although it was still a big chunk of change, considering the value we both took the “why not?” attitude and were ready to book. Unfortunately, the Thanksgiving week deal sold out – almost literally (I try to use that term sparingly) right after we decided to pull the trigger.
If you’re interested, there’s still 7 days left to book the other two time periods, November 29 – December 6 or December 2-9. Living Social also has many domestic packages, mostly involving resorts, but I bet we’ll see more international trips like this in the future.
