You don’t have to be from West Virginia – or ever have been there – to appreciate this John Denver classic.
In fact, you could crank up “Take Me Home, Country Roads” driving to your home, wherever that is; chances are you have to go through the country to get there. It’s a good thing, too, because not every destination has a song with such immediate attachment as the Mountain State has with this number. If you’re from North Dakota you probably don’t have a comparable valentine for your home state. Then again, you can always substitute “West Virginia” with “North Dakota” while you sing along as you drive back to Grand Forks. In fact, reggae outfit Toots & the Maytals did just that when they adapted the song for “west Jamaica”:
